inaugural addresses
For these drawings, I took 54 U.S. presidential inaugural speeches and inter-spliced phrases from each one in order to undermine their rhetoric. I then wrote out this new text of mine using micrography (the historical technique of using words to forms the lines of a drawing). Traditionally, this technique is used with sacred texts in order to both illustrate and mystically activate their meaning. The images here evoke pastoral and historical scenes, though none are directly referential of a specific event. The images include hands exchanging wedding rings, George Washington as a path-finder during the French and Indian War, and the landscape of Mt. Vernon, the home of George Washington.
